Disappearing Acts: Re-Engaging and Re-Launching After Time Away From Work and Social Media

Life deals us all random circumstances that sometimes take us away from our careers and social circles, even leading to extended periods of absence occasionally. Whether it's due to medical leave, long-term unemployment, or a detour for travel and sabbatical, returning to the professional world and re-engaging with social media after a significant hiatus can feel daunting. But fear not, your comeback story (and mine) starts now!

1. Acknowledge the Gap and Own Your Story

Honesty is the best policy. Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile or networking at an industry event, acknowledge the gap, whether reflected in your resume or some other form. Frame your time away positively, focusing on what you learned and how the experience has shaped you.

  • Returning from Medical Leave: "I took a temporary step back to prioritize my health and well-being. Now, I'm energized and eager to contribute my skills."
  • Recovering from Long-Term Unemployment: "I utilized my time away to upskill in [identify new skill] and explore different industries, which broadened my perspective."
  • Returning to the Workforce after Business Ownership: "My entrepreneurial journey provided invaluable experience in [mention specific skills gained], and I'm excited to apply this knowledge in a collaborative environment."

2. Gently Re-Enter the Social Media Sphere

Social media can feel like a whirlwind after a break. Start slow. Update your profiles, reconnect with familiar faces, and dip your toes back into relevant industry conversations. Remember, quality over quantity.

  • Start with One Platform: Focus on the platform most relevant to your field (LinkedIn for professionals, Instagram for creatives, etc.).
  • Curate Your Feed: Unfollow accounts that no longer serve you and seek out inspiring and informative content.
  • Engage Thoughtfully: Comment, share, and participate in discussions to rebuild your online presence.

3. Refresh Your Skills and Network

The professional landscape may have shifted during your absence. Update your skills and knowledge to bridge any gaps.

  • Online Courses: We're all familiar with the various platform options like edX, Udemy, Coursera, etc. But never overlook 'YouTube University', or even better are the many talented independent providers that exist (including FortiPhi Academy)
  • Industry Events: Attend conferences, workshops, and networking events to reconnect with your field and learn about the latest trends.
  • Informational Interviews: Reach out to people in your network for informational interviews to gain insights and advice.

4. Embrace the Comeback

Returning after a break is a testament to your resilience. Embrace this new chapter with confidence and enthusiasm.

  • Highlight Your Strengths: Focus on the unique skills and perspectives you bring to the table.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Start with achievable goals and gradually increase your workload.
  • Celebrate Your Progress: Acknowledge your accomplishments and milestones, no matter how small they might seem.

Remember, your journey is unique. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to re-engaging and re-launching your career and/or your social life. Allow yourself grace, embrace the learning process, and celebrate your return!
